We've all been there; a "meh" relationship that you want to take to the next level. Our three tips will help your relationship get to "AMAZING" status quickly!
1. Discover your own individual value systems, then determine a shared value system. In order to move forward in coexistence with another person, you have to understand who they are and where they are coming from. Writing out your top five values and then sharing them with your partner will help you start conversations about how to decide on shared values then make decisions together that center around those values.
2. Initiate hard conversations and hold each other accountable. “This is something that we’ve recently begun to really dig into. I think you have to when you are constantly around each other and working together,” says April Lovett, Co-Creator of Success in Black and White, a company she owns with her husband. “We work together, we co-parent, we are still in a relationship with each other, and because of that, we have to do the work and have hard conversations about issues that come up; usually right away,” she says. “We also have to hold each other accountable to do what we say we’re going to do. That way, we both take ownership of the relationship while also reminding the other person that they are equal partner in the relationship.”
3. Be each other’s champions. “This is most important,” says Darryl Lovett, Co-Creator of Success in Black and White. “Championing each other is going to look different in different seasons of life. During one season, you may work hard behind the scenes to help your partner attain a goal or dream. You may watch the kids more often, you may take on a larger share of household chores,” he says. “But then, you champion for your partner in a different season by talking them up, by taking your turn watching the kids or cleaning so that they have the time to dedicate to chasing their goals.”
